BAE Systems client story

beyond ‘standard’ project management education

"Participants get to see a whole project from start to finish and that’s actually a novel experience for many. They get to apply project management theory to a realistic project, but with no risk to the company. We expect the majority of our qualified project managers to complete the simulation course. We plan to offer the course in-house so that the natural work teams can use it in project initiation events. It’s the best thing we could possibly do for them and they love every second of the course."

Project Management Processes Manager, Military Air Solutions

BAE Systems is a leading global defence, security and aerospace company. With approximately 105,000 employees worldwide.

Project and programme management are core capabilities across all the BAE Systems operating groups and the company makes a substantial investment in project and programme management training. One of BAE’s operating groups, Military Air Solutions, decided to take their training offering to the ‘next level’ by giving their project staff a chance to actually practise managing a complex project.

Since December 2008, Military Air Solutions has been using Prendo’s Project Leadership simulation in a series of training courses aimed at project staff that have mostly completed their Association of Project Management (APMP) qualification. Participants are organised in competing teams and they manage the simulated project that compresses the experience of managing a two year project into an intense one day workshop. They get to see how their decisions in all the key project management disciplines (e.g. risk and stakeholder management, contract strategy, scope definition, scheduling and resourcing) combine to produce the final outcomes. The results are posted on an internal “Top Gear” leaderboard and the competitive element ensures a very engaging and powerful learning experience.
